Hukarere Station is a 20,000-acre sheep and cattle station located in West Otago, New Zealand.
Hukarere Station has about 18,000 acres of hill country and 2000 acres of rolling lower countryside; ranging from 250m to 1200m above sea level. The land offers a wide variety of terrain, with varying vegetation from fattening pastures to snow tussocks, and The Pomahaka River runs through it.
The hill country is the breeding area of the farms operation and is home to the cows and sheep that initially rear the newborn animals in a sheltered, natural, more extensive environment. The hill country has a wide variety of vegetation with expansive areas of mature and regenerating native forest and shrublands as well as native and improved grasslands. We are fortunate to have plentiful water supplies and natural shelter to assist in animal welfare and reducing animal stress.
The lower rolling country is next to the hill country and rears the young animals after being weaned. It is a more developed environment with improved pastures and tree plantings to create shelter. This is where we grow out our young stock to provide future breeders and the animals for our Meat With Us customers.
Both farms are certified organic and are managed using regenerative/holistic principles such as minimised soil disturbance, planned plant recovery, large mobs so short grazing periods, having a living root and soil cover at all times. These principles have enabled improved soil and freshwater quality, improved animal performance, improved soil carbon levels and greater biodiversity which we are very proud of.
Feel free to ask us a question about our farm, people and organic management as we welcome feedback and suggestions and look forward to growing awareness about how we operate at Hukarere Station.
We welcome visitors to come and enjoy our slice of paradise, by staying at one of our two comfortable hut accommodations and being able to fish for brown trout, hunt free-range red deer, bike, horse ride or walk around the unique beauty of our hill country tussock and grasslands.
